What is L-tryptophan and L-theanine
Studies have investigated the effect of L-tryptophan on cats, especially in multi-pet households, and have found that supplementation with L-tryptophan can reduce behaviors related to stress and anxiety, such as stereotypies, vocalization and agonistic behavior. A double-blind controlled study design with cats receiving L-tryptophan supplementation showed a reduction in these stress-related behaviors, suggesting that L-tryptophan may be an effective tool for treating certain behavioral disorders in cats as part of behavioral therapy. As for L-theanine , there are indications that it may help reduce anxiety and stress in cats, although research appears to be more limited compared to L-tryptophan. Products containing L-theanine, such as Anxitane, have been shown to reduce unwanted behaviors such as inappropriate elimination in cats in an open-label, multicenter study.
